For the first time in his nine year NFL career, Sam Darnold will begin a Super Bowl defense when the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots to open the 2026 NFL regular season.

The Seahawks rushing attack will look different with Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in Kansas City and Zach Charbonnet unavailable for the first four weeks of the season, but Darnold will still have star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba at his disposal.

The pair linked up 119 times for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns last year, good for Seattle single-season records in both yards and receptions while tying Tyler Lockett’s 2020 campaign for the most touchdowns in one year. On the whole, Darnold put together his second-consecutive 4,000-yard, 14-win season before throwing for 672 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions en route to the Lombardi Trophy. Despite their success against the Patriots in February, Darnold said he expects a tough contest to open the season.

“It’s a great opportunity for us. This is a really good football team coming in from New England. We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Darnold said.

Which brings us to today’s quiz. After seeming destined for a journeyman role in the NFL following disastrous stints in New York and Carolina and a year as a backup in San Francisco, Darnold has established himself as one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the NFL. With that being said, can you name the NFL’s active leaders in passing yards?

Good luck!

Jon Gruden has seen enough of the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive struggles. The former NFL head coach isn't blaming Aaron Rodgers, either. He's furious with the players around him, particularly after watching the 42-year-old quarterback absorb a massive hit against the New England Patriots. During the latest Gruden Family Football Show, Gruden tore into Pittsburgh's pass protection, questioned its receiving corps and explained why Rodgers is being denied the opportunity to run the offense that made him a future Hall of Famer. Gruden rips Steelers' offensive execution Gruden pulled out his greaseboard to dissect a particularly ugly protection breakdown against New England. Pittsburgh appeared to have the Patriots' defensive alignment identified, with the offensive line and running back communicating their assignments before the snap. Then everything fell apart. Two defenders created confusion, Pittsburgh failed to pick up the pressure and Rodgers took a crushing hit that Gruden couldn't believe he'd survived. "I've never seen Rodgers take a hit like that," Gruden said. The protection failure was only the beginning of his frustration. Gruden also questioned Pittsburgh's inability to execute passing concepts Rodgers has relied upon for years, including formations designed to isolate receivers in favorable matchups. DK Metcalf drew particular criticism for his dropped passes and inability to consistently create separation. Pittsburgh's problems extend to its blocking on quick throws, where missed assignments have turned routine plays into potentially disastrous situations. "Trips X ISO hand signals, [expletive] pass protection. It's horse***. It's got to get better," Gruden said.

Aaron Rodgers needs more help before things get worse Gruden's concern is straightforward. Pittsburgh has a quarterback who knows how to recognize defenses and exploit mismatches, yet the offense can't consistently take advantage of either. During the show, it was noted that Rodgers had yet to complete a pass beyond 20 yards through two games. Gruden also stressed the importance of getting Michael Pittman Jr. back and finding ways to involve Metcalf. "He's 42 years old. He's a Hall of Famer. You got to protect the guy and great things can happen," Gruden said. Pittsburgh's offensive line is still adjusting to several positional changes, but Rodgers doesn't have the luxury of waiting forever. The Steelers need better protection, more reliable receiving options and considerably fewer mistakes. Otherwise, Gruden's next greaseboard session could get even uglier.
